419 Con Woman Arrested Akyem Oda For Defrauding Banks Posted: 01 Jun 2012 03:00 PM PDT 419 Con Woman Arrested Akyem Oda
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Oda, the Oda Municipal Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Mohammed Cantona, said around 10 a.m.Monday, Akua Addae was sent by Mr Ashitey Neequaye to the Oda branch of Barclays Bank to deposit GH¢3,910 for him. He said the suspect, who is unemployed and native of Agona Swedru, convinced Akua Addae that she (Gladys) was an employee of the bank and could assist her to deposit the money.ASP Cantona said Akua Addae welcomed Gladys's assistance and handed over the money to the suspect. He said in order to swindle Akua Addae, Gladys gave GH¢10 to her to buy some handkerchiefs for the bank manager while she (Gladys) went through the process of depositing the money at the bank for her. According to the police commander, when Akua Addae returned to the bank with the handkerchiefs, Gladys was nowhere to be found. ASP Cantona said Akua Addae sought the assistance of the police guard on duty at the bank, Lance Corporal Moses Agyepong, to trace Gladys's whereabouts. He said Lance Corporal Agyepong rang policemen on duty at the two Oda Police barriers to help arrest the suspect after the complainant had described Gladys's physical features, the clothes she wore and her hair-do to the police. He said fortunately, the policemen on barrier duty at Akyem Asanteman arrested Gladys who was travelling on a mini bus from Oda to Agona Swedru. He said when the suspect was searched, the money was found in her bag. According to the commander, Gladys was sent to the Oda Police Station where the complainant identified her as the one who had defrauded her. He said during police interrogation, Gladys admitted the offence and when asked if she belonged to a syndicate, she replied that she operated alone.ASP Cantona said Gladys used the same trick to defraud Jennifer to the tune of GH¢2,400 at the Oda branch of the GCB last week. When Gladys was arrested last Monday and sent to the Oda Police Station, Jennifer identified her as the one who had duped her at the Oda branch of the GCB. Meanwhile, the Oda District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Albert Annor-Owusu, has remanded Gladys into prison custody to reappear on June 7, 2012. |
‘Men In Black 3’ Censored in China Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:46 PM PDT Men in Black 3 is the latest film to face the wrath of Chinese censors. At least three minutes of Sony's sci-fi comedy have been excised for its Chinese theatrical run, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who was not authorized to speak about it publicly. The offending moments take place in New York's Chinatown. They include a Chinese-restaurant shootout between evil aliens and Will Smith's Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K — the aliens are disguised as restaurant workers — as well as a moment when Smith's J "neuralyzes," or memory-wipes, a group of Chinese bystanders. A Chinese paper, the China Southern Daily, speculated that the latter scene may have been cut because it could be viewed as a comment on China's censorship of the Internet. The news was first reported in the English-language press by Britain's Daily Telegraph, which pegged the total time of the cuts at 13 minutes. MIB 3 opened to more than $21 million in China last weekend, by far the largest total of any of the more than 50 foreign territories in which the movie bowed. Chinese law limits the number of Hollywood movies that can be shown in its theatres, prompting studios to be unusually careful about any China-related content they include in their films. In this case, Sony learned of the Chinese government's objections after the film had been completed. This is hardly the first time a Hollywood movie has been altered for their mainland release. A moment in Mission: Impossible 3 featuring laundry hanging in Shanghai, for instance, was removed before the film was shown in China. Scenes of the Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat playing a villain in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End were also expunged. Studios are sometimes proactive in removing scenes themselves. MGM changed in post-production the nationality of villains in its upcoming Red Dawn reboot, digitally transforming them from Chinese to North Korean. Sony is no stranger to working with the Chinese government. The company collaborated with the Asian nation on its 2010 reboot of The Karate Kid, which was shot in Beijing and other parts of the country and offered a generally positive view of life on the mainland — and starred Will Smith's son, Jaden. Tamale International Airport: Veep signs MoU With Brazilian Firm Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:45 PM PDT Tamale International Airport: Veep signs MoU With Brazilian Firm
Vice President John Mahama, has been meeting with a team of Latin American and African Ministers in Brazil where he has been discussing Ghana’s experiences. He has also been meeting key representatives of countries to source for funds for development projects. The upgrade of the Tamale Airport is part of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) programme expected to boost economic activity in the northern sector of the country. Speaking to a group of journalists last year, John Mahama said "this project is very dear to our hearts and therefore the government is on track to ensuring that this project sees the light of day," he stated. According to him, the government expects that when the airport is converted to an international one, it would open up the Savannah region by making it a major export hub for agricultural produce and other commodities. Muslims who hope to make the holy pilgrimage to Mecca will also have the opportunity to fly directly from Tamale to the holy city. Making the airport an international one would require extending the runway, building a new terminal and improving upon the existing facilities. Currently, over 1500 passengers use the airport on a monthly basis and number is expected to increase exponentially if the airport is expanded. |

NDC tops in use of indecent language in latest media monitoring report Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:15 PM PDT NDC tops in use of indecent language in latest media monitoring report
The report covers two weeks (May 13 – 26) of monitoring language use on the 31 radio stations selected for the project. Specifically, 25 out of the 28 indecent expressions were captured during political discussion programmes aired in the morning and evening/night. The Boiling Point and National Agenda political discussion programmes on Oman FM in particular were the main political discussion programmes on which a significant number of the unacceptable expressions were recorded. The main subject matter around which most of the indecent expressions were made was the internal wrangling within the NDC. The monitoring exercise aims to promote issues-based and decent language campaigning in Ghana's 2012 elections. |
Revealed!Emily Maynards wardrobe to the Bachelorette fashion costs $35 0000 Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:50 PM PDT
A $350,000 wardrobe budget from ABC doesn’t hurt. "We had an enormous clothing budget," Emily's stylist, Cary Fetman, said. "It was bigger than any previous season … and we still went over!" Not that she really needs help – her sweet nature, good looks and adorable daughter are all a guy would ever want – but Maynard, 26, is going all out style-wise."Emily has fabulous tasteand was involved in deciding what we would dress her in," Cary adds. "For me, it was almost like dressing a Barbie doll!"While she dazzles in her strappy $1,045 Christian Louboutin Straratata heels and a $4,000 nude Randi Rahm gown, she does have a list of no-nos."Emily hates flats," Cary revealed of the North Carolinan. "She loves to be a girlie girl. She loves dresses and anything glitzy and sparkly." Oh, and despite her easy-going ways, "She is not a jeans girl by any means." Just something to keep in mind, Arie Luyendyk, Jr. Keep it in mind. |
High school student seduce his teacher for a $400 bet Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:48 PM PDT High school student seduce his teacher for a $400 bet
I think the whole bet was stupid and could end the teacher’s carrier if not handled well. Eric Arty, 18, told his pals yesterday at the Manhattan Theatre Lab High School cafeteria. "I really started feelin' for the shorty." Arty, confined in his friends and showed them a copy of yesterday's Post which he carrys to school, said he will continue to deny the relationship publicly and warned his friends to do the same. His teacher, Julie Warning, 26, called in sick yesterday to her administrative reassignment as she remains under investigation by the Department of Education.Warning must be pretty embarrassed In a dramatic scene outside her upstate Lake Peekskill home, four police cars screeched to the curb and officers spent nearly two hours inside. A Putnam County Sheriff spokesman said a woman inside the home had "requested transportation to the hospital" but would provide no further details. Warning's ex-boyfriend, Jeff Ward, 26, of Mahopac, said the teacher had a history of troubled relationships. The Post first revealed the student-teacher tryst with a photo of the kissing couple on Page 1 of Wednesday's paper. Arty and four classmates anted up $100 each for a bet to see who would be the first to hook up with Warning.

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:29 PM PDT It’s not easy being green – as one Brazilian man proved when he painted himself to look like the Incredible Hulk – and found the colour wouldn’t wash off. Pool attendant Paulo Henrique dos Santos, from Vila Cruzeiro, dressed up as the comic book hero for a running event, but got a nasty shock when the time came to remove the green paint. After frantic scrubbing, the hapless chap realised he’d used a paint reserved for ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines. ![]() According to Brazilian news site Paulo had hoped to buy a brand of paint he’d used on a previous outing as the Hulk, but the shop he went to didn’t have it.Desperate to undo his inking, the would-be superhero spent Sunday and Monday having ‘about 20 baths,’ and was forced to sleep in a room lined with plastic bags. He feared the industrial paint could actually give him lead poisoning, though he appears to have had no symptoms. The 35-year-old, who also works as a DJ in Rio de Janeiro and is known as MC Marronzinho, has achieved overnight celebrity in his local area.As if being bright green wasn’t embarrassing enough, the local press ran pictures of his mother trying to remove the paint – and referred to her as his girlfriend. Strange Photo : Arabic Words In A Sand Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:48 PM PDT I got this photo from people who live around the Sagamu area of Lagos, who said that what you see above happened after a heavy downpour in the area. People surrounded the sand and almost turned it to a shrine. I looked at the photo, looked at it, looked at it oooooo and I didn’t see anything, so I asked them what was strange about it and they said what you see written in the sand is an Arabic word meaning Allah is Great. All our Muslim brothers and sisters, is that really what’s written there? Check out the photo below. |
Ghanaian Teen ‘Lexie Adu’ who drowned in Lake Michigan ‘respected and loved’ Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:42 PM PDT
The body of Lexie Adu was recovered from the waters of Lake Michigan near a Far North Side beach Friday morning. Thursday evening, Adu and two other teens had been at Loyola Park beach near West Greenleaf in Rogers Park, Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Meg Ahlheim said. A strong current swept them under, NBC-Channel 5 news reported. Emergency crews arrived, and they rescued one 14 year old girl, who was taken in good to fair condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, and another teen who refused medical treatment, Ahlheim said. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But Adu's body wasn't found until the following morning. Her father, Frank Adu, told NBC5 that he and his daughter had moved back to his native Ghana, but she wanted to return to study medicine. "She wanted to be a doctor," Frank Adu said. "She was the first person I've ever seen who wanted to be a doctor, not just for the money." She was a freshman at Saint Scholastica Academy. School President Loretta Namovic said students and staff were having a tough time dealing with "the shock of the situation." "Lexie was a wonderful young woman," who was an honor student and a member of the all-girl school's track team, Namovic said. "She was respected and loved by students and staff alike." "It's a tough day for us," said Namovic. Prom was scheduled for Friday night. When classes end in June the school will shut its doors after 146 years because of financial struggles and declining enrollment. "It's been a hard year for us," Namovic said. Incoming search terms:

Microsoft And Nokia Hit Back At Google ‘Patent Troll’ Claims Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT Android creator alleges that rivals are feeding mobile patents to firm that aims to extract billions from handset makers Microsoft and Nokia claim Google’s Android, which runs on phones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3, breaches their patents The smartphone patent wars have heated up further, with Microsoft and Nokia hitting back at claims by Google that they are feeding mobile patents to a “troll” company that aims to extract billions of pounds of payments from handset makers and so push up prices. In a regulatory complaint filed on Thursday evening with the European Commission, the US Department of Justice and the US Federal Trade Commission, Google says that the two companies “are colluding to raise the costs of mobile devices for consumers, creating patent trolls that sidestep promises both companies have made. They should be held accountable, and we hope our complaint spurs others to look into these practices.” Google is understood to be concerned that a company called Mosaid, which is building a large patent portfolio, will begin suing makers of handsets running Google’s Android mobile software over claims that it infringes them. Last September Mosaid, based in Ottawa, took control of 2,000 Nokia patents, including a large number deemed essential to various phone standards. Microsoft is also understood to have given it control of a significant number of patents. Microsoft brushed off Google’s claim as the “desperate tactic” of a company facing regulatory questions about its dominance of online search and digital advertising. Nokia also rejected Google’s complaint, saying that any suggestion of collusion was wrong. “Both companies have their own IPR [intellectual property rights] portfolios and strategies and operate independently,” it said in a statement. “Nokia has made regular patent divestments over the last five years. In each case, any commitments made for standards essential patents transfer to the acquirer and existing licenses for the patents continue. Had Google asked us, we would have been happy to confirm this, which could then have avoided them wasting the [European] commission’s time and resources on such a frivolous complaint.” But the Finnish company then twisted the knife, adding: “We agree with Google that Android devices have significant IP infringement issues, and would welcome constructive efforts to stop unauthorised use of Nokia intellectual property. Nokia has an active licensing program with more than 40 licensees. Companies who are not yet licensed under our standard essential patents should simply approach us and sign up for a licence.” Nokia is suing Viewsonic, an Android device maker, claiming that it has not licensed standards-essential patents for a tablet being sold in Europe. European and US rules say that when a company submits a patent as essential to a standard, it must also agree to license it on “fair, reasonable and non-discriminary” (Frand) terms – so that licences cannot be withheld unreasonably, nor charged on different bases for different licencees. Equally, the patent holder can reasonably sue if a company implements the standard but does not license the patent – as Nokia claims Viewsonic is doing. Google declined a request to share the precise content of its complaint lodged with the regulatory bodies with the Guardian. While it this week won a significant victory over Oracle, which had claimed that Android infringed both copyright and patents on its Java programming language acquired from Sun, a significant number of Android handset makers have signed per-handset licences with Microsoft over patents, while Apple is suing Samsung, HTC and Motorola – three of the largest Android makers – over patents. “Patent trolls”, formally known as “non-practising entities”, are companies which own patents but which do not make anything of their own. They then use the threat or procedure of litigation to force companies that they say infringe patents to pay licensing fees. However, Mosaid does not only use patents; it is also a manufacturer of Nand flash memory. Google’s attack on Microsoft and Nokia marks the escalation of the legal brawls among technology giants trying to gain the upper hand in the rapidly growing market for mobile computing. Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google and acquired for its 17,000-strong patent portfolio, has so far resisted efforts by Microsoft to pay for its use of Android – instead hitting back with its own patents on video and other systems. But in April the EC opened an inquiry into Motorola’s refusal to license “standards-essential” patents used for 3G to Apple and for H.264 video decoding to Microsoft. Nokia joined forces with Microsoft last year when it agreed to adopt Windows Phone as the operating system on its cellphones. Mosaid has made it clear it believes it is sitting on a potential goldmine. After Nokia and Microsoft sold it the patents, Mosaid estimated the royalties from the intellectual property rights could bring it more $1bn in revenue over the next decade. Under terms of the sale, Mosaid keeps one-third of the revenue from the patent royalties with the remainder going to Nokia and Microsoft. That means Mosaid’s revenue estimates imply the patents could generate licensing fees of $3bn during the next decade. Mosaid declined to comment on Thursday. It is already Apple for alleged patent infringement in a Texas federal court. Some of the patents cover parts of open-source software known as the Linux kernel, a form of freely available computer coding that Google used in building its Android operating system. Google alleges Mosaid is reneging on a commitment that Nokia made in a 2005 regulatory filing when the company pledged not to enforce patents against software relying on the Linux kernel.
