Over 600 Nurses And Midwives Cry For Work

NURSEAbout 600 nurses and midwives who were referred after sitting for the licensing Examination in 2010 to rewrite in 2011 and later passed the exams, have raised concerns over the inability of the Nurses and Mildwives Council to post them to the field.

The group wonders why a great number of the Nurses and Midwives are wasting away in their homes when health institutions continue to get choked with patients with a small percentage of nurses and midwives struggling to attend to them.

Spokesperson for the group, Michael Amponsah at a press conference in Kumasi called on the National Service Secretariat and the Health Director to immediately post them without further delays.

“We are just surprised about the reluctance of the Nurses and Midwives council and the National Service Secretariat to post newly qualified nurses and midwives to work” He said.

“In times like this we expect the council to be proactive, people are not qualified but they are working in private institutions and are being paid so why is that people who's fees were subsidized have completed and are sitting down” He queried.

Father Slashes Daughter’s Fingers For Talking To A Man at Obuasi

blood stained knifeA 23-year-old woman allegedly had her fingers slashed by her father on Monday for talking to a gentleman in Sanso, a suburb of Obuasi in the Ashanti region.

Safia Alidu said the gentleman, who she had never known, beckoned her to come for a chat and just as they stood to talk, her father, whose name she gave as Halidu, met them, went into the house and came back with a knife.

Safia, who has refused to seek medical attention, in an interview with XYZ News said her father mercilessly slashed her three fingers to the amazement of both she and the gentleman.

"Last night I was going to auntie's place when a gentleman I don't even know called me to talk to me. My father later called me and asked me where I was and I told him I was standing by the tap. He later came out from the house with a knife in his hand and started to slash me with it".

Oh yawa!! Ashaiman Tops Domestic Violence Statistics

Ashaiman Tops Domestic Violence Statistics

ashaiman Out of 388 crime cases reported to the Tema Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Ashaiman recorded 281 cases, the highest figure among the eight sub-divisions under the Ghana Police Service in Tema, and 15 more than the area recorded at the end of last year's first quarter.

According to the report dated April 4, 2012 and signed by Mrs Rebecca Nyamah, the Tema Regional DOVVSU coordinator, assault led the crime chart in Ashaiman, recording 176 cases as compared to 162 recorded at the end of the 2011 first quarter.

While stealing, threat of harm and threat of death recorded 15 cases each, rape, offensive conduct, defilement, criminal abortion, causing damage and causing harm recorded 5, 7, 23, 2, 11 and 6 cases respectively.

The total number of Ashaiman cases sent to court was 12; the same number of cases pending trial. One hundred and forty-two cases are under investigation, with 90 cases closed; no accused person or suspect has been convicted yet.

The chart covered the Tema Unit, Tema Newtown, Sakumono, Ada, Prampram and Tema Community 11, all areas under the Tema Regional Police jurisdiction. Mrs Rebecca Nyamah, in an interview, expressed surprise at the rate at which assault continued to top crime cases in Ashaiman.

She said her outfit though logistically handicapped, visits schools and churches regularly to carry out sensitisation and education programmes to familiarise community members with the law and the need for all to exercise restraint. It also embarks on campaigns against assault and other categories of domestic violence at lorry stations and other public places, she said.

"But human beings would always want to test the law; and you know the law is straight and strict when it grips you," she remarked.

On other related crime cases such as abortion, defilement and rape, Mrs Nyamah blamed the youth for abusing technology, explaining that the youth try to practice what they watch on the internet. She said,

"Usually when you see guys fidgeting with their phones, it is either they are watching pornographic materials or reading something about how to outwit an innocent person, and what they print on their minds are later manifested in their acts."

The Tema DOVVSU Coordinator called for concerted efforts by parents, teachers, opinion leaders and the media, among others, to drum home the need for morality and tolerance. DOVVSU, she said, would continue to do its best,

"but until all these bodies come onboard to help us, we will continue to have such avoidable criminal cases confronting us."

According to her, parts of Ashaiman have become high density areas, accounting for the high crime rate. Sakumono followed the crime chart with 39 reported cases, 31 more than the area recorded during the same period last year.

Italy earthquake: 15 dead, 200 hurt in 5.8 magnitude

Italy earthquake: 15 dead, 200 hurt in 5.8 magnitude

At least 17 people are dead and hundreds injured after a powerful earthquake struck northern Italy, just nine days after a previous earthquake hit the same region, killing seven people.

ITALY EARTHQUAKEOne of the victims of the 5.8 magnitude quake, which hit the Emilia Romagna region, was a priest who reportedly rushed back into his church to retrieve a Madonna statue. Firefighters were scouring the rubble and mangled remains of buildings for survivors, amid reports that at least 300 people had been injured and thousands left homeless. Emergency workers with sniffer dogs were still looking for a women in the rubble.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which struck just after 9am local time, was the area around the towns of Cavezzo, Medolla and Mirandola, about 30 miles northwest of Bologna. It was the same area that was hit by a quake of 6.0 magnitude on May 20, killing seven people and leaving around 7,000 homeless.

In Cavezzo, officials said more than three quarters of buildings in the historic centre have been judged uninhabitable. The steeple of the church had snapped off and crashed to the ground. “Everything’s collapsed, it’s chaos, buildings across the town are down,” a fireman in Cavezzo said. Shops, banks and cafés were closed and streets cordoned off by police. A large shopping block had been reduced to a heap of smashed bricks and mortar.

Franco Raucci, 62, who is retired, said:

“It was more devastating than the last one last Sunday. We were just licking our wounds from the last earthquake. We thought that all the weak buildings had already fallen.”

Ruggero Tampelini, 73, a pensioner, was too afraid to sleep in his house and set up a tent on a strip of grass outside.

‘I was out shopping. Suddenly there was a huge boom, a deafening noise and the earth started shaking. You could feel the incredible power. People started yelling and saying help me help me. It was a terrible thing. I was absolutely convinced that we had seen the last of it on May 20. I was wrong. This is a catastrophe.’

Residents set up tents in their gardens and were preparing to spend the night in the open for fear of further aftershocks. Towns which were already badly battered from the first quake suffered fresh damage, with churches, towers and factories collapsing into piles of rubble. Soldiers and rescue officials were deployed to the area as emergency coordinators tried to assess the scale of the damage.

Mario Monti, the prime minister, promised that his government would do

“all that it must and all that is possible in the briefest period to guarantee the resumption of normal life in this area that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy.”

In Mirandola, near the quake’s epicentre, the main cathedral collapsed along with the town’s oldest church, St. Frances. In the town of Sant’Agostino, a person was killed by falling debris, while three workers were killed in a factory in Mirandola, which had only reopened on Monday after work was suspended as a result of the earlier quake.

“Last night was the first night we’d spent back in our homes after the first quake. Then another one hit,” one Sant’ Agostino resident said.

Work was suspended in factories owned by Ferrari and Ducati, two of the region’s world famous makers of cars and motorbikes. Modena’s balsamic vinegae industry was also hit, with the head of the consortium saying 15 million euros (£12 million) worth in stock had been “seriously damaged”. The May 20 quake destroyed 400,000 wheels of maturing Parmesan cheese. Italy’s friendly football match against Luxembourg, due to be played in Parma, just 40 miles west of the quake, was cancelled.

Kade Queenmother arrested over chieftaincy disturbances

the ghana policePolice in the Eastern Region have arrested two more persons in connection with the Kade chieftaincy crisis. The two, the Queenmother and her Abusuapanin who were picked up this morning are being prepared for the court over an attempt yesterday to install a new chief.

The rival chief, Nana Debra Twum and the Krontihene of the Traditional Council are already in custody for organizing the event against the orders of the Okyehene and without a police permit. The Krotihene has told Joy News the installation will go ahead today despite their detention. But Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, ASP James Azumah Abass has ruled it out.

He said the four are being held for breaching the Public Order Act, Act 491, which requires persons wishing to organize special public events to give the police a five-day notice. He told Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng the town was calm because "we have sufficient men there to maintain law and order."

Wrong Emcees For Bow Wow-Keri Hilson Show

Posted: 29 May 2012 11:57 AM PDT

Everything seemed to be going well until Emcees for the night were announced.

Ghanaian actor James Gardiner came on stage first as the main MC and immediately he introduced himself the whole exciting atmosphere in the auditorium and the attitude of the crowd changed.

In spite of his experience on Radio at Multimedia, hosting Television Programs and acting experience, good looking James Gardiner didn't have the flair to drive the crowd right from the beginning, and this affected the whole event.

He spoke in a very soft tone on a show which is supposed to be a Hip Hop event, and he clearly showed that he was not cut for that kind of function. He mentioned Majid Michel's name anytime he walked onto the stage, as though Majid was the only important person in the audience. He later introduced his co-MC and it was none other than bad girl Nollywood actress Tontoh Dikeh. Aside the initial cheers from the crowd when she first walked on stage; Tontoh did not add anything to the show.

The Nigerian actress appeared on stage only twice and used every opportunity to showcase her attire. She even went ahead to advertise the name of the Nigerian fashion designer who made her dress.

“I’m going to blow your mind with my clothes", she told the crowd, as she turned round several times for the audience to better assess her.

The two emcees indeed were very boring on stage and made it difficult for the audience to enjoy the show.

The show had an encouraging crowd of about 70% attendance, lighting on stage were ok, sound was on point, and stage design was great as it was expanded to give the artistes more space to perform.

Everything on the night was great aside the emcees who almost marred the flow of the show.

Kwaw Kese, Edem and Gruru had a three song back to back rotation; dance hall sensation Kaaki, Buk Bak all did their bit to entertain the crowd but the MCs could not complement their efforts.

Bow Wow performed with so much energy on stage, and left fans screaming for more. The rap star was happy to be in Ghana as he said on stage "I am very happy to be in Ghana. This is my first but this is definitely not going to be the last time".

He interacted with the crowd intermittently expressing how excited he was to be in Ghana, adding that distance is not an excuse for most American artistes to refuse to come to Africa.

Keri Hilson also combined her smooth voice and sexy body to put up a very exciting interactive and intimate performance. Her two sexy female dancers kept the audience watching the performance from start to finish when she finally dropped her smash hit song 'Knock You Down', as her last song. Keri Hilson also tried some Azonto dance moves as the crowd screamed in shock. She stated on stage that she had been to over 8 different African countries but Ghana so far has been number 1.

The two International acts and all the Ghanaian artistes performed well to keep the crowd alive, with the exception of Mzbel who didn't mount the stage for a reason yet to be known, but the emcees were almost invisible and somewhat irrelevant on stage.

One only wonders what factors the organizers considered before choosing James Gardiner and Tontoh Dikeh as MCs.

'Imajin Advertising' should consider more appropriate MCs for their future events as they are the face and main driving-force of the events. All in all, the "Stand Up GH" concert was a great show artistically and technically, with two boring MCs.
