I am not the next Steve Jobs – Apple’s Tim Cook

Posted: 31 May 2012 03:17 PM PDT

Apple’s new chief executive Tim Cook

Apple’s new chief executive Tim Cook has said he is not trying to be the next Steve Jobs.

“Steve was a visionary. My role was never to replace him,” he said in his first live media interview.

Mr Cook was talking at the Wall Street Journal’s annual All Things Digital conference in California.

He revealed few specifics but said Apple would “double down on secrecy on products” and that Apple TV remains “an area of intense interest”.

Despite being peppered with questions from over an hour talking to technology, media and entertainment executives, Mr Cook revealed only a handful of incremental insights on Apple’s products and strategies.

Regarding a possible integration with Facebook via iTunes or on the iPhone, he said: “Our relationship is good. I think we can do more with them. Stay tuned.”

‘I am who I am’

But he reserved some of his strongest statements for protecting intellectual property.

Rather than agree that the legal battle over patents between Apple and Samsung was taking a toll on innovation, he instead pointed toward patent piracy in general.

“It’s important that Apple not be the developer for the world,” he said.

“We can’t take all of our energy, and all of our care, and finish the painting and have someone else put their name on it.”

When asked, how Apple would change under his leadership, Mr Cook skirted the question several times, but ultimately deferred to Steve Jobs’ legacy as Apple’s founder and chief executive.

“Steve was a visionary. My role was never to replace him. He was an original.”

“I’ve never felt the weight of trying to be Steve. It’s not who I am and it’s not my goal in life.”

“I am who I am, and I’m focused on that, and being a great CEO of Apple.”

‘Strong hand’

Adam Lashinsky, author of Inside Apple: How America’s Most Admired -and Secretive – Company Really Works, attended the talk and said that Tim Cook came across as confident and self-assured.

“We saw an extremely confident, intelligent, comfortable man who has replaced a legend.”

“I think it was very reassuring to see this strong hand on the steering wheel at Apple.”

“He spoke eloquently that he is not a replacement for Steve Jobs, and we should not expect him to be the visionary that Jobs was.”

“In other words we saw a man who is comfortable in his own skin, who knows who he is.”

Tim Bajarin, a technology analyst who has followed Apple since 1981 said: “Make no mistake, this is an incredibly strong leader whose vision and goal is to protect the Apple culture.”

“People don’t really understand how sick Jobs was the past two years of his life. Tim basically has been running the company for over two-and-a-half years.”

“He has the respect and the allegiance of the staff. As a result, that’s why we haven’t seen Apple skip a beat.”

Big Brother Stargame Update:Keitta And Mikdred’s Love Story Gets Bigger Than Ever (Video)

Keitta and Mildred seemed to be more in love than ever during their Diary Session.
Keitta & Mildred
This is a far cry from just a week ago when their relationship seemed to have hit a speed bump. As soon as the pair sat down on the colourful Diary Room couch, Keitta threw a protective arm around his lady and lovingly looked into her eyes.

This prompted Big Brother to ask why the two were smiling like the proverbial cat that got the cream.
Mildred revealed how awesome their relationship has been this past week.

“We have definitely found a nice balance and have managed to make time in the midst of all the drama in Downville. Our relationship is thriving and we put that down to great communication,” she said.

Keitta told Big Brother that he and Mildred will ignore their fellow Housemates and have ‘special time’ in the jacuzzi. Mildred and Keitta are Nominated for possible Eviction this Sunday, alongside Tswana sisters Eve and Edith.

It seems the romance bug has bitten Uganda's Kyle, who revealed a colossal crush on Eve. He told Big Brother in his Diary Session that he is in love with Eve and wanted to tell her how he feels, just before she was Nominated.

Meet the small investor who lost his college fund buying Facebook stock

sam lesser facebokstock11-year-old Sam Lesser learned a hard lesson when he broke open his piggy bank to buy 300 shares of Facebook stock for $10,000 last week. In the blink of an eye, the fifth-grader lost 25% of his investment ($2,500) along with millions of other small investors who hoped to make a fast buck.

The small investors aren't alone; 28-year-old Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is losing, too — at the rate of $15 million per hourFacebook stock has nosedived to under $27 today from its initial price of $38 on May 18. Investors have filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal court alleging insider the large banks that managed Facebook's IPO launch.

Sam's mother filed a dispute at their local Fidelity Investments to get Sam's money back.

"We've spoken with three senior traders and nobody seems to have any answers at Fidelity," said Lesser's mom. We feel misguided and misled," she said, adding that some of her son's potential profits were going to go to Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong charity.

"They are holding my money hostage," said Sam, who bought shares of Apple stock when he was 5. He declined to say how much that stock is worth today.

Canadian p0rn actor films himself beheading victim before mailing body parts to government offices

magnotta-manhuntA massive manhunt is underway in Canada for a deranged porn actor who filmed himself cutting off another man's head, then mailing the body parts to the offices of Canadian government officials.

It isn't clear why Luka Rogno Magnotta, 29, mailed the body parts — a hand and a foot – to the two government officials. Police located the rest of the man's torso and limbs in a suitcase discarded behind an apartment building where Magnotta lived.

According to London's Daily Mail, the low-budget porn actor filmed himself hacking a man's head off with a kitchen knife and ice pick as rock music plays in the background. He then mutilates and dismembers the naked man who is tied to a bed. The film was uploaded online under the title [title removed].

Police believe the unidentified man in the video was already dead when Magnotta dismembered him and played with the body parts in a sexual manner. Other disturbing films uploaded to the Internet shows Magnotta abusing and killing cats — one of the classic signs of a sociopath.

In the film, created two years ago, a man believed to be Magnotta plays with the kittens before placing them inside a plastic bag and attaching a vacuum hose to the bag. He then turns on the vacuum which sucks the air out of the bag. The kittens can be seen clawing frantically at the clear polyurethane bag as it tightens around them.

Police Commander Ian Lafreniere and his officers searched Magnotta's blood stained apartment for evidence Wednesday. Lafreniere believes Magnotta is still in the area.

"As a father, I would have trouble sleeping at night knowing that the suspect was in my neighborhood," said Lafreniere.

US republican party plans to spend $1Billion in 2012 election ads

GOP $1BILLION ADS(NEWSER) – Republican groups plan to spend a record $1 billion on the November elections, and could outspend Democrats by a margin of 2-to-1. Politico has the details on the spending plans of super PACs and other outside groups: The Koch brothers plan to spend $400 million; Karl Rove’s groups are looking at $300 million; pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future—which already spent almost $50 million in the primaries—is aiming for $100 million in the general election; and an array of smaller groups plan to spend anywhere from $5 million to $30 million each.

Some of the money—including a goal of $100 million from the US Chamber of Commerce—is focused on congressional races, but some of those ads will likely boost Romney as well. And of course, all this money—which will go toward TV, radio, and digital ads, mail and phone appeals, voter-turnout efforts and early- or absentee-ballot drives—is in addition to the $800 million or more that the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee intend to raise.

The staggering plans are, Politico notes, “unlike anything seen before in American politics,” and dwarf the then-record-breaking $750 million raised by Barack Obama in 2008. In this cycle, however, the struggling pro-Obama super PAC has a goal of spending $100 million, and labor groups could chip in between $200 million and $400 million.

OMG! Beyonce is 2 months pregnant again?

JAY Z BEYONCE PDAIs Beyonce pregnant with her second child? Blue Ivy may be getting a little brother or sister reports mediatakeout.com. The gossip site says it's not a rumor and according to their snitch who is thisclose to Bey's inner circle, she is no longer drinking and if you know anything about the best performer in the world, she's not one to turn down a glass of wine or champagne.

The insider explained, "She didn't drink any alcohol [for weeks] and we've ordered Petrus & Champagne multiple times. And Petrus is her favorite wine! It just wasn't her."

We're told to expect an announcement "late summer" when Bey is further along in her pregnancy. Now she's only about 2 months.

As much as I would love for Blue Ivy to have a sibling, I don't see Beyonce taking time off to have another child so quickly!

Michael Jackson Begs For Sleep In Letter To Lisa Marie Presley [PHOTO]

Michael Jackson's nickname for his sister Janet Jackson was "Dunk." Unfortunately, he wasn't as cute or creative in picking one for himself. In a letter to his ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, the late King of Pop signed his name "Turd." The letter was originally included in an auction, but was removed from the sale of Jackson's personal items by Presley. In the note Jackson expressed how badly he needed to sleep and that it was negatively impacting his health.

"I truly need this rest, I haven't slept literally in 4 days," he wrote on a faded piece of yellow legal pad paper. "I need to be away from phones and business people."

After four days without sleep we'd feel like turds, too. Jackson died in 2009 from an overdose of Propofol, a drug he took to get sleep. Look at the full letter below. (spotted @ Buzzfeed)

Lekota accusses Prez Jacob Zuma of abuse of office

Posted: 31 May 2012 01:40 PM PDT

Cape Town – Shouts of anger erupted in the National Assembly on Wednesday when Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa Lekota accused President Jacob Zuma of violating his oath of office.

Lekota said the president had failed to uphold his Constitutional obligation to protect the rights of artist Brett Murray, who depicted Zuma with his genitals exposed, and City Press editor Ferial Haffajee, who had refused to remove an image of the painting from the newspaper’s website.

"The president, whose bounden duty it was to uphold the Constitution, did not once utter a word of disapproval against his party leaders and Cabinet members resorting to fascist-style measures and tactics to threaten those who were exercising their rights and waiting for the high court to deliver a judgment," he said.

Lekota was speaking during a raucous debate after Zuma delivered the presidency’s budget speech.

"The president failed to uphold the right of Ferial Haffajee in terms of 16(1)(a) and of Brett Murray in terms of 16(1)(c) and he has failed the nation as a whole by not being faithful to his oath of office."

Lekota, whom MPs accused of shouting and treating the House as a "rally", said Zuma never once asked his followers to await the judgment of the court in the matter.

He said Zuma did not repudiate Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, who is also general secretary of the South African Communist Party, for "acting in direct contravention of the Constitution".

Neither did Zuma condemn "the fascist action" of Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile "who literally frog-marched" Goodman Gallery owner Lisa Esser to make a public apology before the media.

"The shocking failure of the president to uphold the Constitution over the last fortnight ought to warrant a review by this House.

"The laws made in this democratic Parliament seem to be of no consequence and the role of the judiciary of no standing."

As shouts erupted in the House, Lekota asked Deputy Speaker Nomaindia Mfeketo, who was chairing the debate, to protect him from being "humiliated".

Nzimande asked Mfeketo to rule whether Lekota could make such a "serious statement" about Zuma.

"If a member of this House can stand and make a serious statement that the president has violated his oath of office… Such a statement is a serious thing. Madam chair, I ask you to rule."

Mfeketo said the matter would be ruled on later.

In a statement, the Office of ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga said it was "gravely disappointed" by what it termed an "irresponsible and reckless" statement by Lekota.

"Parliament is not a shebeen where spurious allegations are made with impunity," it said.

"Lekota’s conduct makes a mockery of this Parliament. His remarks are baseless, opportunistic, and silly and we reject them with the contempt they deserve."

It said Lekota had violated the proper procedure of the House.

"An allegation of violation of office by a head of state is a serious matter that cannot be made lightly or for cheap politicking in the House," it said.

"In terms of Parliament’s established practice and procedures, an MP who wishes to bring allegations of improper conduct should do so by way of a substantive motion."

It welcomed the commitment by the deputy speaker to look into Lekota’s statement and to make a ruling.

Motshekga’s office was confident that Lekota would be instructed to withdraw his statement and apologise to the House.

FAGRO Holds 1st Stakeholders Meeting

Posted: 31 May 2012 01:38 PM PDT

Sulley Adam, Executive Head of Retail Banking and Chairman of FAGRO 2011The National Food and Agriculture Show (FAGRO), has held a day's high-level stakeholders' meeting to deliberate on activities earmarked for the 4th edition of the show, and also to solicit ideas from members including sponsors, and exhibitors for the event.

Held recently in Accra at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park, the meeting brought together an impressive array of stakeholders who have contributed in diverse ways over the last 3 years, to ensure the successful execution of FAGRO.

The meeting attracted a tall list of concerns, all directed at finding ways to make this year's event an even improved edition of FAGRO, and also help build a strong foundation for FAGRO as an institutionalized national event that needs to be cherished and protected.

Genuine concerns were raised on expanding the event's coverage in other regions where the real farmers and agro-industries are based in order to bring them on board and widen the impact.

Stakeholders also agreed that FAGRO would continue to heed its mandate of collaborating closely with the farmers, and added that tickets for this year's event will be sold in advance to aid the financial standing of FAGRO. Discount for potential participants of the fair was also suggested.

There was a suggestion for reports on growth for the scientific measurement of FAGRO, on which it was disclosed that a team had already prepared a report on that.

The stakeholders also requested for the demonstration of their farming machinery on the exhibition grounds, and suggested a date on which it should be done.

Concerns were also raised on the choice of venue for this year's event, where the stakeholders weighed the economic viability, and compared the use of the International Trade Fair Centre and Efua Sutherland Park. After a long deliberation, it was agreed that the Efua Sutherland Park would be used for this year's event.

A unanimous vote on which date would be best for this year's FAGRO, fell on August.

A successful stakeholders' meeting it was, participants agreed to work together for the greater good of FAGRO as an institution, and also to support this year's event.

This year's FAGRO will be held from August 23 to 25, under the theme: linking farmers' to appropriate market: A value Chain process.

The organizers will soon roll out the activities outlined for this year's event but has assured stakeholders, the youth and the general public, that the 4th National Food and Agric Show (FAGRO 2012), will be an outstanding fair by all standards.
